I often don’t write a blog entry when I release a new calculator, but this one deserves a special announcement.
Life very rarely happens in a straight line, but most calculators assume they do.
This calculator allows for things to happen as haphazardly as you like. Random years off for a sabbatical. Big fluctuations in income or spend, and so on. It is incredibly flexible and adaptable.
It is called the ‘retirement planning spreadsheet’ and you can find it here.
This spreadsheet will let you know how much you may need to retire, when you can retire, how much you can spend, how much you need to earn, what investment returns you may need, and more.
It’s a great sheet for running any different scenarios you may be considering to see which may be the best path forward for you. For example, helping with the decision to buy a house or not, or maybe whether to slow down at work or not, or perhaps have a kid or not. The great thing with this being your own personal excel spreadsheet is that you can save and make copies to run several different lifetime scenarios.
It also neatly separates retirement savings (such as KiwiSaver) from non retirement savings. This is important as some retirement spreadsheets may show you have enough total savings, but if you dig a little deeper you may not actually have enough savings for before the age of access to retirement funds.
On the linked page, I have also added a video that goes over how to use this spreadsheet and get the most of out of it, as there are quite a few layers to this one.
If you find this resource valuable, I’d appreciate you spread the word as I think it is a resource that could benefit many people.
